Additional details for EPOYou are legally required to apply for an EPO in the following situations:
- Leaving Permanently: You are departing Indonesia and do not intend to renew your current stay permit.
- Changing Sponsors (Employers): You are switching to a new employer. The old KITAS must be closed via an EPO before the new employer can sponsor a new one.
- Changing Permit Types: You are transitioning from one type of permit to another (e.g., from a Work KITAS to a Spouse KITAS, or KITAS to KITAP).
- Early Termination: Your employment contract is terminated or you resign before your KITAS expires.
Timing is critical when applying for an EPO. You should generally start the application 2 to 3 weeks before your KITAS expires or before your planned departure date.
Once Immigration issues the EPO stamp in your passport, your KITAS is immediately invalid, and you have a strict maximum of 7 days to leave Indonesia. If you fail to depart within this 7-day window, you will incur overstay penalties (currently IDR 1,000,000 per day).
While specific requirements can vary slightly depending on your sponsor and KITAS type (Work, Investor, Spouse, etc.), you will typically need:
- Original Passport: Must be physically submitted to Immigration.
- Original KITAS / E-ITAS: To be surrendered and canceled.
- Proof of Departure: A confirmed flight ticket showing your departure from Indonesia within the necessary timeframe.
- Sponsor Documents: Application and guarantee letters from your sponsor (with company letterhead and wet stamps if sponsored by a company).
- Termination Documents (For Work KITAS): Proof that your work permit (RPTKA/IMTA) has been formally canceled by the Ministry of Manpower.
An EPO can only be processed onshore (while you are still physically in Indonesia).
If you have already left Indonesia, do not plan to return, and your KITAS is still active, you must process an ERP (Exit Re-Entry Permit)—often referred to as an offshore closure or Termination of Stay Permit (TSP). You cannot simply let your KITAS expire while abroad. The ERP requires you to send a scan of your exit stamp and flight tickets to your sponsor or agent in Indonesia to formally close the permit on your behalf.
Some expats mistakenly assume they can just fly out of the country and let their visa expire. Failing to process an EPO or ERP leaves your immigration file "open" and can cause significant issues:
- Blocked Future Entry: You may be denied entry into Indonesia on future visits because the system shows an unresolved stay permit.
- Inability to Get New Visas: You cannot apply for a new visa (such as a tourist visa, digital nomad visa, or new work KITAS) until the old one is properly closed.
- Sponsor Liability: Your former employer or sponsor remains legally responsible for you until the permit is closed.
